Welcome

We are the Denver-area chapter of the International Aerobatic Club, a division of the Experimental Aircraft Association. Our members come from all along the Front Range from Ft. Collins to Colorado Springs, as well as from neighboring states. RMAC's goal is safety above all else. We share a love of aerobatic flying, whether for personal enjoyment, the precise demands of competition, or working on the sidelines as judges and support personnel at contests. Our activities fall into three main categories:

  • Competition
  • Recreational flying, including critique and practice days
  • Group meetings and social events

Results from the Rocky Mtn Oyster contest

Despite low ceilings on Friday (the designated "practice day", ha-ha) and fog delays both Saturday and Sunday, the contest organizers managed to get three flights for everyone except Advanced Glider. As always, it was fun having the Air Force Academy glider acro team in attendance.

Many thanks to CD Jamie Treat, scorer Bwana Bob Buckley, Chief Judges Mike Forney and Mark Matticola, and all the other volunteers. Special mentions go out to Dick "Cold Wing" Bevington, Betty Stewart, Pat Fogarty, and Carey Gabrielle, all of whom drove down just to help out.

Congrats to Dan Peters for his first 1st-place trophy in Sportsman, Erin Kelly for taking 1st place in Intermediate in his very first attempt at that category (!), and Phil DeTuck for winning 1st place in Advanced.

On the glider side, top honors went to Joseph Gould (Sportsman), Joshua Wilson (Intermediate), and Dustin Rivich (Advanced).

Full results are available online for both Power and Glider.

LuEllen Blum has passed

LuEllen (Shewmaker) Blum passed away on August 27 from a sudden recurrence of cancer.

She and her husband John shared a deep love of flying. John proposed to LuEllen by having a Stearman tow a banner that read “LuEllen Marry Me John” over a fly-in at St. Francis KS, as described in Stephen Coonts' book "Cannibal Queen". LuEllen became involved with IAC12 in the early 1990s, competing in the Sportsman category at many aerobatic competitions, participating as a judge, and working on numerous club events over the years.

LuEllen was a real estate broker for Re/Max Northwest and, due to her enjoyment of flying and travel, she became a Flight Attendant for Frontier Airlines.

Earl Allen lost in mountain flying crash

From Maralyn Mencarini:

I have some very sad news to share. Earl died in an airplane crash on Saturday, August 9. He was instructing his student on a mountain flight and the plane went down in a remote area east of Steamboat Springs on its way back to Boulder. We don’t know many details yet, but I will share with you what I can later.
There are two bright spots to this ordeal. We had a reunion for Earl’s family in Pagosa Springs (CO) last week and spent a wonderful time with them. On our way home from PS on Friday Earl and I talked about how much fun we had and how good it was to see everyone. So he saw his family and they saw him and we all left on a happy note. And, also, he died doing what he loved best — flying.
This does not seem real yet, so I am coping OK. My sister and her family and one of Earl’s brothers and his wife, a niece, and two great-nephews are with me now. We are putting together a memorial service and will let you know the details early this week.
For now, please keep Earl’s family and me in your thoughts.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
