Earl Allen lost in mountain flying crash

From Maralyn Mencarini:

I have some very sad news to share. Earl died in an airplane crash on Saturday, August 9. He was instructing his student on a mountain flight and the plane went down in a remote area east of Steamboat Springs on its way back to Boulder. We don’t know many details yet, but I will share with you what I can later.
There are two bright spots to this ordeal. We had a reunion for Earl’s family in Pagosa Springs (CO) last week and spent a wonderful time with them. On our way home from PS on Friday Earl and I talked about how much fun we had and how good it was to see everyone. So he saw his family and they saw him and we all left on a happy note. And, also, he died doing what he loved best — flying.
This does not seem real yet, so I am coping OK. My sister and her family and one of Earl’s brothers and his wife, a niece, and two great-nephews are with me now. We are putting together a memorial service and will let you know the details early this week.
For now, please keep Earl’s family and me in your thoughts.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
